And our view is that phonological processing is a key element in reading. The ability to identify and differentiate individual sounds (phonemic awareness) is the foundation of this. Other factors come into play such as speed of processing and cognitive skills such as memory, attention and sequencing and they need to be sharpened. Ultimately we know from research that the brain can adapt and improve,this is known as brain plasticity. That is to say, for the majority there is a way to
significantly improve reading skills.
